The 77th Cannes Film Festival has just ended and has left us with great surprises! The crime comedy ‘Emilia Pérez’, directed by the talented Jacques Audiard, has received praise and a well-deserved ovation. But that’s not all, she has also won one of the most important awards, ‘Best Actress’, in addition to the jury award!
The ‘Best Actress’ award was awarded to the entire female cast of the film: Selena Gómez, the Mexican Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón.
The film premiered on May 18 and received a nine-minute ovation. What does it mean? It is one of the most anticipated releases of this year and is believed to have high hopes for the 2025 awards season.
What is Emilia Pérez about?
The synopsis of ‘Emilia Pérez’ says the following: “Rita is a lawyer from a large firm who one day receives an unexpected offer: to help the feared boss of a cartel retire from his business and disappear forever, becoming the woman he has always dreamed of being.”
The film is co-produced by the Mexican production company, Pimienta Films. Directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard and merges two genres that don’t seem to mix: Crime and comedy.
It is a musical, in which Selena Gomez performs one of the songs from the film. Besides that, she also has another great collaborator: Saint Laurent and its creative director Anthony Vaccarello.
When will Emilia Pérez be released?
The film will be released on August 28 of this year. Although it premiered this month in Cannes, the public will have to wait longer to see it, this will allow the filmmakers more time to publicize the feature film.
Who is part of the cast of Emilia Pérez?
The cast is made up of a group of great artists such as: Zoe Saldaña, plays Rita, a lawyer of Mexican origin who is in charge of helping the criminal leader of the film.
Karla Sofía Gascón plays the role of Juan Del Monte, the leader who decides to “follow his heart” and change his identity to change his life.
There is also the Mexican, Adriana Paz, the Venezuelan Edgar Ramírez and, of course, the actress and singer Selena Gomez.
In this installment of the Cannes Festival, the Palme d’Or went to ‘Now’, the grand prize ‘All We Imagine as Light’, the Jury Prize ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’, went with the Special Prize of the night.
