Palestinian death toll in Gaza exceeds 35,000, Health Ministry says

The Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip, governed by the radical Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, announced this Sunday (05/15/2024) that 35,034 people have died since the start of the war with Israel, unleashed after its terrorist attacks on October 7, and 78,755 people were injured. In the last 24 hours, at least 63 people died and 114 new injuries occurred, the Ministry said in a statement.

The figures are known as the Israeli Army expands its attacks in Rafah, at the southernmost end of the Strip, where it is estimated that some 300,000 people have fled due to the constant threat of bombings. In addition, the armed forces have returned to fighting in the Jabalia refugee camp in the north, where they say the Islamist group is regrouping.

The most up-to-date data from the Gaza Ministry of Health, which collects information from the different hospitals and clinics in the enclave, indicates that there is still Some 10,000 people remain missing in Gaza, while 72% of the conflict’s fatalities are women and children.. The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, today again called for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Strip and said that a large-scale operation in Rafah “cannot take place.” “I reiterate my call, the call of the entire world for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, for the unconditional release of all hostages and for an immediate increase in humanitarian aid,” António Guterres declared in a video address to an international conference of donors in Kuwait. “But a ceasefire will only be the beginning. It will be a long road to recover from the devastation and trauma of this war,” he warned.
