According to the 2024 Wellness Trends Report presented by health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett (H&B), concern about aging has reached a new level among consumers.

Alex Glover, senior nutritionist at H&B, highlights that as average life expectancy increases and people live longer, concepts such as ‘reduce biological age’ and ‘reverse age’ are emerging. Instead of focusing solely on cosmetic products, the key to maintaining a youthful appearance this year lies in eating habits.

Emerging research suggests that incorporating foods rich in anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants and essential vitamins such as A, C, E and K can have a significant impact on the skin, contributing to a younger, healthier appearance. Additionally, specialized ingredients such as astaxanthin, a carotenoid with antioxidant properties, are gaining attention in this area.

One of the elements highlighted in this report is taurine, recognized for its powerful antioxidant action. Although evidence on its ability to slow aging in humans is limited, a recent study published in the journal Nutrition suggests that taurine could be a beneficial dietary supplement in this regard.

Searches for “next natural energy ingredient” increased significantly on H&B’s website, suggesting growing interest in alternative anti-aging options.

As for the sources of taurine, meat, dairy, fish and algae stand out, the latter option being especially relevant for those who follow a plant-based diet.

Another important point is the role of fermented foods in the anti-aging process. These foods, rich in probiotics, promote intestinal health, which in turn affects digestion, nutrient absorption and immune function, crucial aspects to counteract aging.

Additionally, fermentation increases nutrient bioavailability and provides antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

Kimchi, a Korean fermented vegetable dish, is a popular choice to enjoy these benefits.

When it comes to fruits, blueberries stand out for their high antioxidant content, which combats oxidative stress and promotes healthy skin. Incorporating them into your daily diet can be beneficial in maintaining a youthful appearance from the inside out.

For a versatile option, freeze-dried blueberry powder can be used in a variety of recipes, from smoothies to baking.

Finally, fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, essential for skin health. These fatty acids help keep skin hydrated and supple, reduce inflammation and protect against damage caused by UV rays, contributing to a younger, healthier appearance.

Incorporating these foods into your regular diet can be an effective strategy to maintain youth and vitality throughout the years.
