Through an official press release, Toyota Alabama has given the green light to the start of manufacturing of its 2.4 liter i-FORCE turbo engine series destined for the Tacoma, thanks to a previous investment of 222 million dollars towards the diversification of the brand’s propulsion systems, with the aim of responding to the needs and expectations of customers.

“The completion of the 2.4-liter i-FORCE turbo engine line marks an important milestone for Toyota Alabama and further supports job security for our 2,000 employees,” says Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Alabama.

“Now that Tacoma offers a hybrid option, every line in our plant includes engines for hybrid vehicles. “It is our team and their skills that have paved the way for this plant to play a critical role in Toyota’s electrified future,” he continued.

In this way, Toyota is committed to reducing and neutralizing carbon in its products, with investment plans that exceed $70 billion in the electrification of vehicles until 2030.

The introduction of the 2.4 liter i-FORCE turbo engine line marks the sixth expansion of the manufacturing complex and brings Toyota Alabama’s total investment to $1.5 billion. In 2023, the plant achieved record production, assembling more than 777,000 engines for vehicles manufactured in North America.

Among the models that benefit from this production are the popular Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Tacoma, Highlander, Sienna and RAV4, for which four and six cylinder engines are manufactured.

Toyota initiatives

The opening of this new line will generate long-term employment and foster success in our operating communities. In that sense, last year Toyota announced two initiatives:

A joint investment of $49 million dollars on a solar panel, in collaboration with Huntsville Utilities and Toyota Tsusho, which aims to cover more than 70% of Toyota Alabama’s energy needs upon completion.

On the other hand, they will be granted grants of up to $6.7 million to support the preparation of Huntsville City Schools students for future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

These grants are part of the initiative “Driving Possibilities” from the Toyota USA Foundation and will fund the gradual implementation of educational programs over five years in selected schools.
