In the primary elections on March 5, 15 candidates are competing for the position of Congressman representing District 30.

Four – all Democrats – lead the list. Mike Feuer is a former Los Angeles City Attorney General, City Councilman, and Assemblyman. Laura Friedman is currently a state assemblywoman. Nick Melvoin, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board Member. Anthony Portantino is a state Senator and has represented district 25 in Sacramento since 2016. He was previously an assemblyman and councilor-mayor of La Cañada Flintridge.

If neither candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two will advance to the November general election.

The winner will replace Congressman Adam Schiff who is running for U.S. Senator.

Real America News considers that Anthony Portantino is the best candidate for the position and recommends its readers vote for him.

District 30 includes parts of Pasadena, the Los Angeles communities of Echo Park, Hancock Park, Hollywood, Park La Brea, and the cities of Burbank, Glendale, and West Hollywood.

Anthony Portantino has supported unions and workers’ demands in the state. He is the author – along with fellow state senator María Elena Durazo – of a law that provides unemployment benefits to workers on strike for more than two weeks, a motion vetoed by the governor but which he has now reintroduced for the current legislative cycle. .

He has authored several gun safety measures, including state regulations for concealed carry of weapons and limiting who can carry firearms in public. The law he authored, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in September, guarantees that only responsible and law-abiding citizens have permits to carry weapons and establishes the minimum age for this at 21 years.

And he emphasizes the expansion of mental health care, regarding which he writes to La Opinión: “I am a tireless leader in the effort to destigmatize mental health.”

As part of his plans to be elected, he will oppose those “who are trying to cut Social Security, deny climate change and politicize immigration policies,” and pledges to partner with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to reduce the cost of housing, expand access to free or affordable health care, regardless of immigration status, and make our communities safer from gun violence. And he promises to bring legislation to Congress that would prohibit the construction of schools within 500 feet of freeways.

Aware of the limitations of a rookie congressman, he intends to focus on two topics: the safe storage of firearms, which he wrote the law for in California, and the funding of special education.

For his support of Latino and non-Latino workers, his commitment to the fight for the environment and firearms safety, among others, La Opinión asks you to vote for Anthony Portantino to Congress on March 5!
