Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, reaffirmed that the impeachment promoted against him by the Republicans of the House of Representatives lacks elements that could blame him for not adequately protecting the border.

This week, The official was accused of his alleged mismanagement of the southern border to prevent more waves of immigrants from continuing to cross into the national territory through Mexico.

By a vote of 214 to 213, it was determined that he should face impeachment.

During an interview with the television network cnnat the Munich Security Conference, Germany, the official He downplayed the vote that made him the first cabinet secretary to be impeached in 150 years.

“I don’t let that distract me from work. Would you have preferred correction to prevail? Of course. So, the fact that he didn’t do it does not stop me from doing the job that the president of the United States has entrusted to me,” he indicated.

In addition, The Cuban-born politician ruled out that the scandal generated by his impeachment would compromise his position as a diplomat vis-à-vis the leaders of other nations.

“They understand very well the politics of the moment, not only in the United States, but also in their respective countries. The leaders I meet with, for the most part, know me, they know the seriousness of my purpose and that I am focused on the mission,” he stressed.

Mayorkas urged his opponents in the House of Representatives to support bipartisan immigration reform and not to use the social phenomenon as an element of pressure in electoral times.

“I had the privilege and honor of sitting with a bipartisan group of senators to craft legislative solutions that are decades overdue. In fact, that’s what Republicans insisted on: the bipartisan group of senators delivered. The question everyone is asking is: was a solution really wanted or do people want the problem as a tool for politics?,” he concluded.

It should be noted that Democrats in the Senate could dismiss the charges with a simple majority vote and then the case against Mayorkas will simply become an anecdotal issue.
