President Joe Biden expressed his support for the Senate’s Bipartisan National Security Agreement, published this Sunday, which contemplates stricter immigration and asylum laws to control the crisis at the border, as well as additional spending to support US allies, including Ukraine and Israel.
“For too long, decades ago, the immigration system has been broken. It’s time to fix it. That is why more than two months ago I directed members of my administration to work with a bipartisan group of senators to finally seriously address the issue,” Biden said in a statement after the bill was finally released. law that has been in discussion for months in the Senate.
The president indicated that bipartisan national security deal includes toughest, fairest border reforms in decades. “I strongly support it,” she said.
“It will make our country safer, our border will be safer, will treat people fairly and humanely while preserving legal immigrationin line with our values as a nation,” Biden added.
He explained that as president, The deal would give him new emergency authority to close the border when overwhelmed.Additionally, it will make the asylum process more fair and efficient, expedite work permits so those who are in the U.S. and qualify can get to work more quickly, create more opportunities for families to reunite, and ensure that the most vulnerable unaccompanied young children have paid legal representation.
“It will provide the resources I have repeatedly requested to secure the border by adding border patrol agents, immigration judges, asylum officers and state-of-the-art inspection machines to help detect and stop the flow of fentanyl. While this agreement does not address everything I would have wanted, these reforms are essential to making our border more orderly, secure, fair and humane,” he noted.
Likewise, the bipartisan national security agreement also “enables the United States to continue our vital work, together with partners around the world, to defend Ukraine’s freedom and support its ability to defend itself against Russian aggression. As I have said before, if we do not stop Putin’s appetite for power and control in Ukraine, it will not be limited to just Ukraine and the costs to the United States will increase. This agreement also provides Israel with what it needs to protect its people and defend itself from Hamas terrorists. And it will provide vital humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.”
Biden too sent a message to House Republicanswho represent the biggest threat to the approval of the agreement, which is expected to be discussed this week.
“Now, House Republicans have to decide. Do you want to solve the problem? Or do they want to continue playing politics with the border? I have made my decision. I am ready to solve the problem. I’m ready to secure the border. And so are the American people,” he said.
He added: “I know we have our divisions at home, but we cannot allow partisan politics to get in the way of our responsibilities as a great nation. I refuse to allow that to happen. In times like these, we have to remember who we are. “We are the United States of America and there is nothing, nothing beyond our ability if we do it together.”
I urge Congress to come together and quickly pass the bipartisan agreement. “Bring it to my desk so I can sign it into law immediately.”he finished.
