One dead after a house explosion in Nebraska caused by “destructive devices”

Authorities found early Sunday morning the lifeless body of a person in the remains of a house in Nebraska that, according to the preliminary investigation, exploded due to the presence of “destructive devices.”

Hastings Police said in a news release that they along with Hastings Fire and Rescue responded to 618 South Boston Ave around 3:15 a.m. after a 911 call reported the explosion.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene they found secondary explosionswhich caused the house to almost completely collapse.

“Based on initial observations and information obtained early in the investigation, it was determined that the explosions were likely due to destructive devices. He contacted the Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and Nebraska State Fire Marshal“said the police statement.

Among the rubble of the destroyed house, they found the victim, whose name was not immediately released.

“Since the initial response, crews have been working to locate additional destructive devices and explosive materials so that a thorough investigation can be completed and ensure everyone’s safety,” officials said.

The statement indicated that the Adams County Prosecutor’s Office was informed of the event due to the death investigation that the Hastings Police Department is supervising.

Due to the level of destruction and the need to secure and thoroughly investigate the site, agencies remained there for several hours. Hastings is a city of about 25,000 people located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Lincoln.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy, and we thank all first responders, assisting agencies and our community for their support,” Hastings police added.

John Smucker, owner of the company that manages the business complex that includes the hotel, said there were no guests present as the inn closes the week before Christmas each year for maintenance and repairs.
