The 24th edition of the Black Reel Awards is marked by the impressive performance of “The Color Purple”, the film adaptation of the award-winning musical, directed by Blitz Bazawule. This production has reached a historic mark with 19 nominations, thus becoming the most nominated film in the history of the awards in the musical category.
Among the most notable categories, “The Color Purple” competes for Best Film, Best Director and Best Emerging Director. Additionally, cast member Fantasia Barrino has earned a nomination for Best Lead Performance, marking a milestone as she is the second American Idol contestant to receive such a distinction, following in the footsteps of Jennifer Hudson.
In total, the film has garnered three nominations for Best Supporting Performance and another three for Best New Performance. The recognition extends to the technical and musical categories, with the exception of Best Photography.
Another film that stands out in this edition is “Rustin”, which has accumulated 10 nominations, including the coveted categories of Outstanding Film and Outstanding Ensemble. Colman Domingo, featured actor in “The Color Purple,” has received two nominations, one for Best Lead Performance and another for Best Supporting Performance.
In the competition for the most individual nominations, Cord Jefferson, author of “American Fiction,” and AV Rockwell, director of “A Thousand and One,” have tied with five nominations each. This joint achievement is further highlighted by coinciding in the categories of Best First Screenplay, Best Screenplay, Best Emerging Director and Best Director.
The Black Reel Awards ceremony, scheduled for January 16, promises to be an exciting event. In addition to the aforementioned films, other productions such as “Inception” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also compete in various categories.

New adaptation of “The Color Purple” faces challenges in its production
The iconic play “The Color Purple” is preparing its return to the big screen in a new film adaptation starring Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks. The story, which had its successful debut in 1985 under the direction of Steven Spielberg, now features Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey as producers, who faced unique challenges during the development of the project.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah Winfrey revealed that, despite the film’s previous success, the budget for this new adaptation rose considerably, reaching almost $100 million. This significant figure put additional pressure on the team, as the film had to recoup its investment, an even greater challenge in today’s film industry.
The pressure from the studio to include superstars like Beyoncé or Rihanna in the cast was evident. Winfrey shared that, although both artists are admired, they firmly believe that “The Color Purple” can stand out without relying on names in music.
