The 2023 NFL season has been the worst in history for quarterback injuries; half of the 32 starters in the position have suffered injuries that have taken them out of a game or prevented them from being in at least one game.
The worst thing is that in six of those cases their injuries ended their season.; which is equivalent to 19% of the holders.
Percentage that will rise to 22 if Steelers’ Kenny Pickket does not play againwho on Tuesday underwent surgery for a sprained right ankle that he suffered the previous Sunday and that will require at least a month of recovery, the time remaining until the end of the campaign.
The injured quarterbacks
The first to see his season cut short was New York Jets star Aaron Rodgers, a veteran who spent 18 years with the Packers. Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon in the first quarter in his debut game on September 11.
He was followed in Week 5 by Anthony Richardson, a rookie selected in the first round of this year’s Draft to command the Indianapolis Colts’ offense.
In week 2, Richardson left the duel against the Texans due to a concussion that prevented him from playing against the Ravens in week 3. He returned to the controls in weeks 4 and 5, but in the latter he injured his right shoulder; he required surgery and months of recovery.
35-year-old veteran Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings was the second quarterback to miss the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. It happened in the week 8 matchup against the Packers.
In the case of Daniel Jones of the New York Giants, a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee was what ruled him out of the season in Week 9.
Before, in 5, Jones injured his neck, which prevented him from leading the Giants offense three consecutive games, in his return against the Raiders, in 9, his knee injury occurred.
At the end of the Week 10 game against the Ravens, Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns informed his team that he felt severe pain in his right shoulder; An MRI revealed that he had a displaced fracture that ended his activity this year.
This injury had already caused him to miss the games in weeks 4 and 6. He returned in week 7, but a blow to the area prevented him from finishing the game against the Colts. He was absent again in the 8th; he returned to perform in the wins of weeks 9 and 10, his last of the year.
The next one with a serious injury was Joe Burrow, of the Cincinnati Bengals. In week 11 He tore a ligament in his right wrist, an injury that required surgery and ended his season.
The list of quarterbacks who have been injured this year is completed by Jimmy Garoppolo, from the Raiders; He was injured in his back.
Falcons’ Desmond Ridder; Derek Carr, of Saints; and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Browns; They suffered a concussion.
Bryce Young, of Panthers; Ryan Tennehill, Titans; and Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars, had ankle injuries. Mathew Stafford, Rams; and Justin Fields, Bears; They injured the thumb of their right hand. And Giants’ Tyrod Taylor injured his ribs.
