Republican Representative George Santos (New York) was expelled from the House of Representatives, due to two parallel investigations into alleged fraud, theft and impersonation in the 2022 elections.

Santos faces 23 criminal charges in the Eastern District Court of New York, where he will have a trial in September 2024.

It was the third vote against Santos to remove him from office, after the Ethics Committee found that the Republican had violated several federal laws with his fraudulent acts with money from the electoral campaign.

After 11 months in office, Santos thus became the sixth legislator expelled from the Lower House, after a complicated debate and differences between Republicans.

There were 112 Republicans who joined the vote pushed by the Democrats, after the expulsion project proposed by Democrat Robert Garcia (California).

In the last week, Santos maintained a defiant stance and dismissed attempts to expel him, stating that it was a political move, claiming that he was not guilty of the charges against him, in addition to demanding due process, something he will have in court in NY.
