New York subway worker killed by train

Authorities reported that a New York City subway worker was hit by a train and died early this Wednesday morning.

Officials of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority They said the fatal accident occurred around 12:15 a.m. just south of the station Macy’s – Herald Square in Manhattan.

The 57-year-old employee was performing scheduled work when he was somehow swept under a northbound D train, authorities said.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospitalwhere he was declared dead.

MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber made the announcement at the agency’s safety committee meeting hours later.

“There has been a safety suspension of all public transport work in the city. New York Citynon-essential work, and our people were in the hospital last night with the worker’s family and, obviously, they are very much in our thoughts at this moment,” he said in statements cited by local newspapers.

Leiber assured that an investigation is underway into what went wrong.

The MTA said he was working as a flagger. These are the ones who help promote safety by alerting crews of approaching trains to continue work further down the line.

He NYC Transit President Rich Davey, in charge of the city’s subway and buses, asked for a moment of silence for the fallen worker. “These are dangerous jobs that we ask our people to do day in and day out,” he said.

The National Transportation Board said it would send a team to investigate the death.
