Arizona hiker found dead on Grand Canyon trail

A hiker identified by authorities as James Handschy, a 65-year-old man Oracle, Arizona, was found dead along a trail in the Grand Canyon last week. This is the second death of this type recorded in less than two months in the national park.

The rescuers and park rangers of the Grand Canyon They found Handschy unconscious Thursday after the park’s regional communications center received an alert from a personal locator beacon. This is a device that hikers can use to transmit individual distress signals from remote areas such as Bright Angel Trail.

Bright Angel Trail, one of several off-piste trails in the Grand Canyon which have become popular routes for visitors, take hikers from a trailhead along the south rim to the Colorado Riverwhich crosses the bottom of the canyon.

On Thursday, the personalized distress signal came from a location in Bright Angel Trail approximately 1 and a half miles in front of Havasupai Gardens.

The park service said in a statement that a rescuer at the campground immediately responded on foot, while another park service search and rescue team responded by helicopter and pronounced Handschy dead when they arrived at the scene.

He National Park Service is conducting an investigation into Handschy’s death in coordination with the Coconino County Coronerthe park service said.

Handschy’s death came just two months after a 55-year-old Virginia man died in mid-September while attempting to hike 21 miles through the Grand Canyon in a single day.

Authorities said at the time that the hiker was found dead along a trail leading from the South Rim to North Rimin a place that can take 12 to 15 hours to reach from the trailhead.

Handschy’s death was at least the 10th this year in the Grand Canyon National Park, the Associated Press reported, citing a park spokesperson. At least four of the deaths have been related to hiking, three of which occurred along Bright Angel Trail.

In September, a woman from Indiana 36-year-old died while trying to complete the same hike as Handschy. Authorities said she was found unconscious near Three-Mile Resthouse on Bright Angel Trail.

While in July, a 57-year-old woman died while trying to complete an eight-mile hike while temperatures in the Grand Canyon They reached three digits.
