Staying at the top of a sporting discipline is not easy and can often lead to facing psychological dilemmas that are difficult to overcome. The established American swimmer Michael Phelps faced these types of problems.
In his participation in the World Business Forumthe winner of 28 medals in the Olympic Games confessed that He had a very bad time during it and was even on the verge of taking his own life.which is why now in retirement he wants to help other athletes cope with the pressure in their profession.
“I want to help people who are having a hard time. I want to save lives. I also thought about suicide and I want to help these people. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Talking about these issues has saved my life,” Phelps said.
Asked about his legacy, the 38-year-old sports legend assured that his triumphs in the pool will always be there to motivate the next generations, as well as his dedication to be the best, but he also wants his testimony to serve to escape from adverse situations and suicide.
“I want to do everything I can to help people who are having a hard time. I want to remind people that they are not alone.“he remarked.
On his sports career: “People thought that winning a gold medal was impossible and I won 28. I want to teach young people that no matter what you pursue, it is always possible to achieve it.”
Phelps also commented on how difficult seniority and thinking about retirement can be for an athlete, so his advice is that they should look for “something that they are passionate about” and talk about their difficulties with a specialist without fear and honestly.
“They should find something that they are passionate about. It was difficult for me to find it (…) Sometimes mental health plays tricks on you. You have to talk to other people and carry out your strategies. It’s important to find something that excites you,” she said.
Michael Phelps is not only a legend in swimming pools, he is also considered that way in sports. To date he is the most decorated in the Olympic Games with 28 medals (23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze).
