Despite recommendations issued by the Pentagon to avoid traveling to Israel at this time, Chris Christie, candidate for the Republican candidacy ahead of the primaries, announced that this weekend he will travel to Tel-Aviv in response to an invitation extended to him by the government of the Jewish nation.
Last week, In a memo, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced to members of the US military a restriction on travel to Israel while the invasion of Gaza continues.
This restriction would be put to the consideration of the majority of politicians who, if they ignored it, would assume responsibility for what could happen to them.
“Israel will not have support for visits by congressional delegations during this period, and no Department of Defense support will be made available for congressional travel to Israel without my approval.”indicates part of the document confirmed by a Department of Defense official to the newspaper The Hill.
Nevertheless, The measure went unnoticed by Chris Christie who intends to meet with some families of people kidnapped by the Islamic group Hamas and with Israeli government officials.
In this regard, the former governor of New Jersey also informed a group of journalists that the Israeli government approached him last week to invite him to visit his nation.
“They said they appreciated the things I was saying and the stance I was taking and that if I was interested in coming, they could welcome me and I made the decision to travel,” he said.
During an interview with the television network cnn, The 61-year-old Republican acknowledged that at this time it is not possible to reach a solution to the war conflict taking place in Gaza.
“I think there can be no discussion at this time about a two-state solution until Hamas has the capacity to be able to launch that type of terrorist attack again,” he said.
In this way, it is expected that next week, after having visited Israel, Christie will organize a conference at the Hudson Institute where he will speak about foreign policy.
