Hurricane Otis caused much destruction in Acapulco and The GNP Arena, the venue where the Mexican Tennis Open is held, was no exception.
The organizers of the Mexico’s most important event on the ATP tour, They study alternatives to carry out the tournament scheduled to be played on February 26 to March 2, 2024 in the city of Acapulco, hit by Hurricane Otis.
In a press release released this Wednesday, Mextenis, the organizing company of the ATP 500 tournament, explained that last Monday members of the company visited the tournament arena facilities.
Since that day, the directors have been in charge of analyzing the different alternatives to hold the tournament. Mextenis did not reveal the status of the Acapulco arena, but assured that “they will announce a decision as soon as possible.”
Hurricane Otis generated economic losses of $16 billion dollars in Acapulco and the damage reached 80 percent of the hotels in Acapulco, 16,000 homes and 20,000 vehicles, in addition to 48 deaths.
Along with pointing out in their press release that they are analyzing the situation for 2024, the organizers mentioned that they delivered humanitarian aid collected at their collection center and asked to continue donating to the victims.
The 2024 edition of the Mexican Open has the Greek as its main figures in its main draw Stefanos Tsitsipassixth racket in the world, the Norwegian Casper Ruud (seventh), the German Alexander Zverev (octave) and the American Taylor Fritz (ninth).
For the first time in history, the Acapulco tournament was going to be held two days after the Los Cabos Open, the other tennis tournament run by Mextenis.
This allowed several of Acapulco’s figures, such as Tsitsipas, to confirm their participation for both tournaments.
He Mexican Open It has been held since 1993 and has had the Spanish as its greatest champions Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, along with the Austrian Thomas Muster, all with four titles.
In the 2023 edition, which commemorated the 30 years of the competition, the winner was the Australian Alex de Minaur, who won his first title in the tournament by defeating the American Tommy Paul in the final and winning the title of the Mexican Tennis Open.
