Julio Iglesias, one of the most iconic figures in Spanish music, has maintained his popularity over the years. His family has become a frequent media topic, capturing the attention of the media with every step they take and every stir they generate.
However, not all members of the Iglesias family have sought the same notoriety in the public sphere. Some of them have preferred to keep their private lives away from the spotlight and have opted for discretion. This is particularly true in the case of Carlos Iglesias, one of the singer’s brothers.
Carlos Iglesias, who has worked as a real estate developer for more than two decades, became the center of attention recently when it was announced that the First Section of the Provincial Court of Madrid had convicted him of a tax crime. The sentence establishes a sentence of six months in prison and a fine of almost thirty million euros.
The events that led to this conviction date back to 2001, when Carlos Iglesias, in his role as manager of the company Rolimpa Trading Corporation, did not present a statement nor did he pay taxes on the sale of three pieces of land, with a value of 46,277,932.04 euros, which he had previously acquired in 1989 for 601,012 euros.
In addition to the prison sentence and fine, Carlos Iglesias has also been sentenced to four years of loss of the possibility of receiving subsidies or public aid and the deprivation of tax or Social Security benefits. It must also compensate the Public Treasury with a total of 19,624,655 euros, plus late payment interest, which adds up to almost thirty million euros. Rolimpa Trading Corporation will assume subsidiary liability for said amount.
The sentence details that the magistrates consider that “Rolimpa Trading Corporation should have informed the Spanish Tax Agency about the profits obtained from the sale of the land.” The lack of declaration constituted a fraud against the Public Treasury of 19,624,655.16 euros, a sum that was incorporated into the assets of Carlos-Luis Iglesias as an illicit economic benefit.
