The United States government imposed economic sanctions on 13 members and four companies of the Sinaloa Cartel for trafficking fentanyl and other drugs, according to the Treasury Department in a statement.

This action, “closely coordinated with the government of Mexico, including the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF),” allowed the sanctioning of Juan Carlos Morgan Huertaalias “Cacayo,” the document states.

The criminal leader, who is a fugitive and operates in the state of Sonora, is accused of supervising the trafficking of several tons of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl from Mexico to the United States.

According to the statement, Morgan Huerta used “trucks with trailers, among other concealment methods, to transport drugs across the border.” In April 2021, he was accused of drug trafficking by a US court..

Along with “Cacayo,” other members of his family were sanctioned, including four brothers and an uncle: José Arnoldo Morgan Huerta, alias “Chachio”; José Luis Morgan Huerta, alias “Gordo”; Miguel Angel Morgan Huerta and Martín Morgan Huerta, as well as his uncle, Oscar Murillo Morgan, alias “Chino.”

It was indicated that each of them carried out various activities for the organization such as bribing authorities, maintaining drug supply sources, managing transportation and logistics, negotiating trade agreements and laundering money.

The others sanctioned are the Mexicans David Alonso Chavarin Preciado, Jesús Francisco Camacho Porchas, Oscar Enrique Moreno Orozco, Ramiro Martín Romero Wirichaga, Sergio Isaías Hernández Mazón and Álvaro Ramos Acosta, as well as the Colombian Cristian Julián Meneses Ospina.

“The United States will aggressively pursue all complicit operators and facilitators of these illicit fentanyl networks,” said Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson.
