The US could reduce the sentence of the former Mexican prosecutor who testified against García Luna

The trial against Genaro García Luna exposed the largest case of corruption within the Mexican authorities, and its links with drug trafficking cartels.

During the hearings, several witnesses took the stand to reveal the relationship between the former Secretary of Security and the Sinaloa Cartelmany of them drug traffickers who were part of that organization, or even former officials who were previously accused of corruption.

One of them is Edgar Veytiaformer prosecutor for the state of Nayarit, who in 2019 was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting that he received bribes from organized crime.

Now, a few months after his testimony, Judge Carol Bagley Amon ordered a review of his sentence, after the accused requested a review of his case arguing several things: From lack of evidence to failures in due process.

In a hearing held in the Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York, it was announced that the case review will take place in March 2024so the government must deliver documentation before the 13th of that month, while the defense must do so before the 20th. Meanwhile, the new sentence will be handed down on the 27th.

According to the Aristegui Noticias site, Veytia had already had 3 years reduced from her sentencesince his record from the Bureau of Prisons marks his departure for 2034 since he was arrested in 2017.

With this new review, in March it will be seen how many more years are reduced, although there is also the possibility that they will release him after he has already served 5 years in prison.
