They warn that hate crimes against Latinos are becoming more and more serious

In an investigation released by Telemundo, data from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University concluded that The 10 largest cities in the United States recorded a significant increase in hate crimes in 2022or, with average increases of 22% until totaling the record number of 1,889 cases.

Even nationally, according to FBI data, there was a general increase in hate crimes in 2022, with a total of 11,634 cases, compared to 10,840 in 2021.

According to the publication in Telemundo, Los Angeles, the second largest city in the country, recorded the highest number of hate crimes, with a record number of 609, of which 195 were against blacks, 98 against gays, 91 against Jews, and 88 against Latinos. Chicago, the third city in the country (85% more), followed by Austin, Texas (59%).

“We are seeing that different groups of people in the United States are involved in conspiracy theories, which are sometimes against Muslims, sometimes against African Americans, and also against Latinos,” as the network quoted Brian Levin, director of the center of studies.

Even in previous days, Frankie Miranda, president of the Hispanic Federation in the United States, said in an interview with Bloomberg that, “It is alarming, and the first step we must take as a community is to report hate crimes and discrimination when it occursn,” he continued, arguing that “when people come forward, even anonymously, we can identify the places and times where this hate occurs.”

It is estimated at the national level, Annual FBI statistics released Oct. 16 show hate crimes increased 47% from 2019 to 2022. Just over 60% of these crimes occur for racial reasons, and around 15% are for religious reasons.

According to Telemundo, in a preview of the next report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, which will be published in the coming weeks, hate crimes against Hispanics increased by 41% between 2020 and 2021, reaching the record number of 698.

According to The San Diego Union Tribune, the Leadership Conference Educational Fund (LCEF) also released a report of violence against African Americans, Latinos, Jews, Muslims, people with disabilities, Arabs, indigenous people and assault victims because of their gender identity.

According to the LCEF analysis, “Tragically, reported hate crimes have almost doubled” since 2015, increasing by more than 80%, and 2021 was the year with the highest number of these crimes recorded since the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began publishing this data in 1991.
