City of Los Angeles pays tribute to iconic Hollywood sign that turns 100 years old

The city of Los Angeles celebrates this Tuesday 100 years of existence of the iconic Hollywood sign.

The city council declared October 31 as “Hollywood Sign Day”.

Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who represents District 4, where the Hollywood sign is located in Mount Lee, made the announcement during Tuesday’s meeting and praised the work of the Hollywood Sign Trusta non-profit organization intended to maintain, repair and insure the famous sign.

On October 10, the council approved a resolution presented by Raman to honor 100 years of the signwhich was designated as a historical cultural monument in 1973.

“(The poster) attracts so many people. It brings a lot of money into the city and as we move into the next century of the Hollywood sign, we need to use some of those dollars to make sure we maintain the park around it and ensure that it continues to be a resource for the people who come to visit it, without being a nuisance to the residents living around it,” Raman said.

In 1978, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce promoted a campaign called “Save the Sign”, which had the purpose of raising $250,000 dollars to build a new sign, with a more permanent material, with the same design and size as the original. The initiative said the sign “survived” after years of neglect and repair before being rebuilt in October 1978.

He Hollywood Sign Trust honored with 2023 Preservation Award awarded by the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“As the sign celebrates its centennial throughout 2023, the Hollywood Sign Trust and the city of Los Angeles continue to protect Hollywood’s biggest star and educate the world about Los Angeles’ most famous icon,” the resolution said. .

“The Hollywood sign remains a celestial fixture above an ever-changing city and a beacon for starlets from all walks of life, They are nine simple white letters“he added.

Los Angeles Tourism President and CEO Adam Burke said that the sign helps the recovery of tourismhit hard by the COVID pandemic.

Burke noted that tourism is the fourth largest employment sector in Los Angeles, with some 550,000 people dedicated to work related to tourism.

Last year, tourists visiting Los Angeles left an approximate spill of $34.5 billion dollars to the local business community.

In 1923, the sign began as an advertising fence concept for a real estate development called Hollywood Land.

The developers donated 423 acres of undeveloped housing to the city, an offer the city accepted and He added it to the surface of the park on January 30, 1945.
