During a recent forum of the Círculo de Montevideo Foundation titled “The Rebirth of Ethics”, the Mexican businessman and engineer listed as one of the fourteenth richest men in the world, Carlos Slim proposed reforming the working day to only 3 days a week.

This influential figure has also expressed his perspective on the retirement age, pointing out the need to increase the retirement year to age 75 instead of 60 or 65 as currently established.

Slim, who according to Bloomberg has a fortune of approximately 82.9 billion dollars, He highlighted that these adjustments in the working day would more easily address the challenges of the labor market by increasing, for example, the availability of employment.

The businessman said that “what I know, I have said it several times, is that you must work three days, twelve hours a day, three days to accommodate three other people who work the other three days and retire at age seventy-five, not at sixty-five or sixty,” Slim said.

Given the growing concern about unemployment in most countries, this proposal for Slim offers a logical solution as extending the retirement age would simultaneously develop the capacity of the social security system to support retirees in the future.

AI in the labor market

In the forum Slim also delved into topics such as the incorporation of artificial intelligence and the role this plays in the labor market, both for the generation of employment and the increase in the productivity of the companies that use it.

To which he again referred that a reduction in working hours to 12 hours a week would contribute to the creation of new job opportunitiesmaking sectors such as sports or entertainment become more important for the economy.

However, he did not leave aside his opinion regarding other factors also addressed in the forum such as social inequality, expressing once again that the best investment to eradicate poverty is reducing working hours and further consolidate training in education and employment.

War conflicts in the world

Finally, Slim gave his perspective on the war conflicts that have arisen in recent years in the world, highlighting that they should not exist since they are irrational situations, and calling for peace he indicated that it is better to compete for markets than for territories.
