Who is Mike Johnson, the new Speaker of the House?

Thanks to the unanimous support of the Republican Party, Mike Johnson became the new speaker of the House of Representatives, but behind his appointment is a meteoric rise in politics.

Lawyer specialized in constitutional law, James Michael Johnson was first elected to the House in 2016.

Before his appointment as leader of the Senate He served as vice president of the House Republican Conference, as well as deputy vice president of the Republican Party.

In addition, the 51-year-old politician is a member of the Judicial Commission and the Armed Forces Commission and even served as president of the Republican Studies Commission.

As part of his academic training, he graduated in Business Administration from Louisiana State University.

Later, he obtained a doctorate in Law accredited by the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and from that moment on he became a university professor alternating his duties as a conservative radio host.

Mike Johnson’s political career began in the legislature of his native Louisianawhere he served from 2015 to 2017, later being elected to Congress in the Fourth District.

The most controversial thing about his career is that At the time he was part of a group of House Republicans who promoted voting in favor of maintaining Donald Trump’s objection to the electoral votes on January 6, 2021, this under the approach of annulling the elections held weeks before.

In fact, he is credited with sending an email in his personal capacity to all House Republicans requesting their signatures for a brief in the Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the electoral college votes of multiple states.

Outside of politics, Johnson is married to Kelly Lary, a pastoral counselor and professor specializing in family-related issues, with whom they have four children.

Various social organizations that oppose abortion have highlighted Johnson’s work in favor of life and they point out that he fought to close an abortion clinic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
