David Benavídez sets his sights on Canelo Álvarez as a businessman: “I respect everything he does”

After building an excellent career as a professional boxer, which began at the age of 16, David Benavídez is already under the great boxing spotlight. In March he defeated Caleb Plant, this November he will face Demetrius Andrade in a clash of undefeated champions and, of course, he has been aspiring for years for an opportunity against Canelo Álvarez.

A fight between David Benavídez and Saúl Álvarez is something that the public is crying out for and today that duel seems more viable and perhaps closer than ever. The 26-year-old man from Phoenix who was nicknamed by Mike Tyson as “El Monstruo Mexicano” spoke in a recent conversation with La Opinión about the respect he feels for the Guadalajara superstar..

“I respect everything he does, honestly,” Benavídez said of Canelo when asked about following in the redhead’s footsteps. “He is a very good fighter, a good businessman (businessman) too, makes a lot of money. I think there is a lot to learn there. and that’s what I want to be too: not just be a boxer, I want to have my own companies, make a lot of money too and we’re going in that direction.”

– Do you think that fight is closer?

“Well, people keep calling (asking for) that fight. That is the fight they want to watch and I believe it will happen. I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but it is going to happen,” she responded.

But Benavídez, who has Mexican blood on his father’s side and Ecuadorian on his mother’s, says he is focused in the moment and does not get ahead of himself: “I train very hard every day and when that moment comes [contra Canelo] It will arrive and I will be one hundred percent ready.”

During the talk in Los Angeles, Benavídez expressed his love for boxing.

“Right now I do what I love, I love this sport and I am going to fight in Las Vegas in front of like 15,000 people. “This is a dream for me,” commented the man with a 27-0 record (23 KOs) and who has won multiple super middleweight world championships.. “I want to be the best in the world.”

Of course, to become one, he will first have to dethrone the undisputed king of super middleweights, Saúl Álvarez.

David Benavídez and the Spanish: “They always bullied me”

Benavídez, who now lives in the Seattle area, He also talked about why he decided to learn to speak Spanish better and revealed that he received teasing.

“When I was little I didn’t know how to speak very well and the only reason I learned to speak is to do interviews. I started talking when I was about 14 years old, they always bullied me, they always told me things. I was very embarrassed to speak,” Benavídez revealed.

“That’s why I made the decision to learn and I have many fans from Mexico too, many Latin fanswell then I have to do more and talk more.”

Regarding that, the rising fighter sent a message to children and young people who do not dare to speak Spanish because of the shame of not doing it well to continue practicing it. Then, he shared his advice for those who, for various reasons, do not have a good time in the face of adversity.

“These people have to find something that makes them happy,” Benavídez said. “I was like that too, but what does make me very happy is boxing.”. I think they have to find something that does give meaning to their life…find what they love.”

The fight between David Benavídez and Demetrius Andrade will be on November 25 in Las Vegas and whoever wins will emerge as a possible rival for Canelo in 2024.
