A Venezuelan Phillies prospect died in a car accident in Venezuela

The Minor Leagues (Milb) confirmed the death of the Philadelphia Phillies’ Venezuelan prospect Alexeis Azuaje. According to various Venezuelan journalists, the 21-year-old young man had a traffic accident in the state of Miranda, Venezuela.

“Alexeis Azuaje died at the age of 21. He left too soon. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this time,” Milb posted on his X account, formerly known as Twitter.

Journalist Darvinson Rojas explained that Azuaje had a traffic accident on the Charallave-Ocumare del Tuy highway, near Alfarería Continental CA in Matalinda, in the state of Miranda (Venezuela).

The Clearwater Threshers second baseman was driving the vehicle when he collided with a highway lighting pole. With him were three companions, of whom two also died, Yeison Gómez Viera and Jorgelis Soto Luna, the third person suffered serious injuries and continues to receive medical attention.

Alexeis Azuaje’s path in the Minor Leagues

Venezuelan Alexeis Azuaje signed as second baseman on July 2, 2018 As a prospect highly valued by the organization, from that date he began his path in the world of baseball.

Azuaje played in the Dominican Professional Summer League until Class A, where he played in 2022.

The Venezuelan’s career was delayed due to the multiple injuries he had to face. Due to his injuries, he was unable to play a single game in the 2023 season and remained on the injured list for the entire season.

Azuaje left a lifetime batting average .292 with a .822 OPS, adding 82 runs scored, 112 hits, 29 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 44 RBIs, 14 walks, 16 stolen bases and 44 strikeouts.

At this time, no final report on the accident or the people involved is unknown. Only the model of the vehicle that the Venezuelan was driving and the names of the people who accompanied him are known.
