Matt Gaetz, representative of Florida, severely criticized Patrick McHenry’s decision as pro tem speaker of the House of Representativesby sending senators home for a week instead of appointing the politician to permanently fill Kevin McCarthy’s position.
During an interview with the television network Newsmaxthe 38-year-old Republican shared his annoyance over the time wasted in legislating several bills due to a poor decision.
“McHenry now has the power of the presidency and literally his first act as Speaker Pro Tem of the House was to send everyone home until Tuesday. That’s going in the wrong direction.
We should be working to elect a new president, tackling our appropriations bills, and entering into a negotiation with the Senate to fund the government, but instead, these people had to go home and cry for a week,” he said.
Given the lack of leadership that Patrick McHenry showed in the temporary position he holds, Gaetz referred to the urgency of electing the right politician to continue the activities of the Senate.
“We must get a new president and get leadership to understand the sense of urgency that all viewers and the American people feel,” he emphasized.
It should be noted that Matt Gaetz is the main person responsible for the impeachment of the speaker of the House of Representatives, He had been trying for months to convince members of his party that Kevin McCarthy’s decisions benefited the Democrats more than his own party.
And that is how, on Tuesday night, a vote was taken whose result was in favor of the dismissal of the Californian senator with eight Republicans joining forces with the Democrats to remove him.
Given this situation, Until a new permanent president is appointed in the House of Representatives, there is no possibility of resuming operations.
Therefore, the Republicans will meet until next Tuesday to select their candidate to fill the vacant seat.
