The trial of Senator Bob Menéndez for bribery and extortion will begin on May 6, 2024but before that Judge Sidney Stein confirmed a schedule for the presentation of evidence by prosecutors and defense motions.
Besides, The Southern District Court in New York appointed personnel who will have the authority and security access to handle classified documentswhich will be part of the judicial process, since Menéndez is also accused of helping the government of Egypt.
“On the recommendation of the Department of Justice Security Officer, the Court appoints Supervisory Security Specialist Harry J. Rucker as Classified Information Security Officer and Security Specialists Daniel O. Hartenstine, Daniella M. Medel, Matthew W . Mullery and Winfield S. Slade as alternate Classified Information Security Officers in the aforementioned case,” Judge Stein’s order reads.
According to the accusation, Senator Menéndez would have delivered “highly classified” information from the State Department to the government of Egypt, through his wife and one of the accused businessmen. He pleaded “not guilty.”
“The Security Officer of the Department of Justice has certified in writing that each of the persons mentioned above are authorized for the level and category of classified information that will be involved in this litigation,” the judge’s decision on personnel states.
The accusation against Menéndez indicates that The Democrat would have requested information from the United States Embassy in Cairo to the State Departmentwhich he shared with his wife and she with one of the accomplices, who then sent it to officials in Egypt.
Court documents mention that the senator influenced the benefits of businessmen Wael Hana, José Uribe and Fred Daibes and in trade and arms agreements with Egypt.
Menéndez faces three charges: conspiracy to commit bribery, attempt and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion, but faces judicial proceedings after pay bail of $100,000 and hand over your passport.
Menéndez’s defense is made up of lawyers David Kolansky and Seth Farber, who must present motions before January 8, 2023 with a response from prosecutors by the 29th of the same month.
