The Government of Cuba blamed the United States for the accident with 10 dead Cuban migrants in Chiapas, southern Mexico, and urged him to adopt the “necessary measures” to avoid similar events.

This message came in a statement from the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) in which it is recognized that the Irregular migratory flow of Cuban citizens through the Central American corridor bound for the United States has experienced “obvious growth” in recent months.

In that sense, the Minrex considered that this situation “in turn, it increases the probability of unfortunate events occurring”like the overturning of the truck that last Sunday was transporting around twenty Cuban migrants along a highway in the Mexican municipality of Pijijiapan150 kilometers from the border city of Tapachula.

“Cuba has repeatedly warned about the risks associated with the illegal smuggling of migrants and human trafficking, phenomena closely linked to irregular migration, that place the migrant in a vulnerable situation; and makes her a victim of organized crime, traffickers, extortion and abuses and illicit actions associated with this scourge,” stated the Minrex.

The Foreign Ministry added that it has alerted the Washington administration about its “responsibility” with “irregular emigration and disorderly movement of Cubans arriving or intending to reach their borders.”

He also criticized the US immigration policy, because in his opinion it is “privileging” the irregular Cuban migrant with the Cuban Adjustment Act, which grants them a “differentiated and unique treatment” by providing “an expeditious route to obtaining residency, regardless of the ways and means they use” on the way to reaching the US.

“This behavior affects not only Cuba, the Cuban emigrant and the United States itself, but also has consequences for several transit countries in the region,” underlined the statement, which also stressed that it is an issue “that has been repeatedly discussed” with the US Government.

He also stressed Minrex Cuba’s “commitment” to “regular, safe and orderly migration” and assured that he will continue “working and cooperating” with governments in the region toto prevent irregular, insecure and disorderly migrationprevent risky outings and fight against acts of violence associated with this phenomenon, human trafficking and illegal migrant smuggling.

Unprecedented exodus

Cuba has been experiencing an unprecedented migratory exodus for more than two years, linked in the first instance to the severe economic crisis that the country is suffering.

According to data from the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (Comar), Mexico is on track to set a new record in refugee applications during the current year, which far exceed 129,000 and among the largest groups of immigrants they receive are Cubans.
