Football is in mourning after confirming the death of the British Maddy Cusack, a Sheffield United player at the age of 27.
Cusack was found dead on Wednesday night and her relatives have asked for privacy so the reasons for her death have not been revealed.
“Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the death of Maddy Cusack. Maddy, player on the women’s team since 2019 and marketing executive of the club, died on Wednesday,” the club reported on social networks.
Cusack debuted with the team in 2019 and since then surpassed the figure of 100 games played, the first player in the history of the women’s team to achieve this.
“This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane. Maddy had a unique position being part of several teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone he came into contact with,” said Sheffield United chief executive Stephen Bettis.
“We are all devastated to learn of the passing of Maddy Cusack. “On behalf of the FA, the Lionesses, the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship, our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Maddy’s family, friends, team-mates and everyone at Sheffield United,” shared Sue Campbell, Director of women’s football in the FA.
In addition, the midfielder also worked as a marketing executive at the club, which plays in the Championship (English Second Division) and had renewed her contract with Sheffield United in July.
Real Madrid and other English clubs send their condolences
Florentino Pérez and the board of directors of Real Madrid have expressed their “condolences and affection” to the family, teammates and loved ones of Maddy Cusack, a Sheffield United player, who died at the age of 27.
“Real Madrid, its president and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of Maddy Cusack, Sheffield United player, and wants to express his condolences and love to his family, his teammates, his club and his loved ones. Rest in peace”, indicates Real Madrid.
Manchester United women’s team said: “We are deeply saddened to hear this. Sending our condolences to Maddy’s loved ones and the Sheffield United family at this time. Rest in peace.”
