President Joe Biden celebrated the “Hispanic heritage” as “heritage” of the United States during the 46th edition of the annual gala of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), which recognizes the achievements of a community that represents around 19 % of the country’s inhabitants.
Biden made these statements before an audience of more than a thousand people at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the capital, in an annual event that brings together who’s who of the Hispanic political world and each year features a top-level musical guest.
“We are the only country in the world created around the idea that we are all equal and have to be treated as such. “We have never forgotten this, like our MAGA friends did,” said Biden, alluding to the radical Republicans, grouped under the acronym of the slogan “Make America Great Again,” who are capable of “banning books” and “erasing parts of history” to forget the legacy of the United States.
To which he added that “diversity” is “the true strength” of the United States and that The country needs the values of Hispanics, since “they have always represented” the ideal of taking advantage of their “opportunities” and “fulfilling dreams.”
Likewise, the US president referred to the announcement this Wednesday for the renewal and expansion of an immigration permit known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which will allow up to 472,000 Venezuelans to work and reside legally in the US, including those who have remained there since July 31, 2023.
“We are significantly expanding the legal avenues of entry so that companies can get the workers they need. “I have also ordered my team to make historic increases in the number of refugees from Latin America,” Biden said.
And he returned to the charge against the “MAGA” for their vision of American immigration policy. “MAGA Republicans spent four years gutting the immigration system under my predecessor. Today they continue to undermine our border security.”
The president also addressed his management of the economy, already popularly known as “Bidenomics,” with which he highlighted that 4 million of the 13.5 million jobs that have been created in this legislature fell to Hispanics and that “the unemployment rate among Latinos” is at its “lowest point in history.”
“In addition, there has been an increase in the number of Latinos who have access to health insurance by almost 1 million and thus the gap in access to prescription medications for elderly Latinos is closing,” he added during the 46th delivery of the Institute’s annual ceremony. of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHCI).
The CHCI is a Hispanic, non-partisan and non-profit association that promotes leadership through its new generation of young people and, in addition, presents the Medallion Award for Excellence, one of the most prestigious awards for examples of professional career and service to the Latino community.
This recognition went to the immigrant rights defender Norma Pimentel in its 2023 edition; to the reference in the field of canine behavior and rehabilitation, César Millán; and comedian Joel Armogasto Martínez, nicknamed “The Kid Mero.”
This Thursday’s gala is part of Hispanic Heritage Month, which lasts until October 15 in Washington and during that time praises the contributions of Latin Americans in the United States.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated between September 15 and October 15 in the US. and its creation dates back to 1968, when Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson established that celebration to commemorate the Latino roots of the United States.
