Tropical Storm Ophelia formed over the Atlantic Ocean, triggering a warning from North Carolina to Marylandso the authorities monitor the phenomenon.

Ophelia is forecast to approach the North Carolina coast. Rain, tropical storm-force winds and storm surge will reach parts of the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic coast Friday night into Saturday.

Ophelia is forecast to make landfall as a tropical storm along the North Carolina coast on Saturday morning.

The tropical storm warning covers cities such as Wilmington, North Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and Ocean City, Maryland. Storm surge warnings have also been issued for parts of the North Carolina and southeastern Virginia coasts.

Additionally, the heaviest rainfall, up to 6 inches, was said to be possible in eastern North Carolina and Virginia. Coastal flooding is possible.

By Saturday morning, lHeavy rain will move north through the Interstate 95 corridor, hitting Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York City.

About 3 inches of rain is possible in coastal areas from North Carolina to New Jersey.

Rain and gusty winds will persist throughout Saturday and will likely weaken overnight. But clouds and rain are forecast to linger in parts of the Northeast on Sunday as the storm slowly leaves the region.
