Since its conception in the visionary mind of Elon Musk, Starlink has been one of SpaceX’s most ambitious projects. This initiative, designed to bring connectivity to remote and underserved parts of the world, has become a technological revolution.
In 2017, SpaceX filed its plan with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a constellation of more than 12,000 satellites into low Earth orbit. This project, with a projected investment of USD $10 billion, aimed to provide global internet coverage. The first group of Starlink satellites was launched in 2019, marking the beginning of this revolution.
Expansion in Latin America
Although Starlink’s initial projections were bold, with revenue of $1.4 billion in 2022 and more than 1.5 million subscribers, the company has yet to reach its goals. However, its expansion in Latin America could change that panorama.
In 2023, Starlink is taking leaps and bounds in Latin America. The arrival of the service to Mexico through Mercado Libre marks an important milestone in the region. This e-commerce platform becomes the first authorized Starlink provider on the entire continent.
Starlink is already present in other Latin American countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Guatemala, Panama and El Salvador, where it offers internet services.
Speed
Unlike traditional satellite Internet services, Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit, significantly reducing latency and offers Internet speeds between 50 and 200 Mbps. This technology is revolutionary, especially for remote areas in Latin America.
In Mexico, Starlink has adapted its prices for the local market, with a down payment of approximately USD $486 for the installation kit and antenna, followed by a monthly fee of around USD $64. With nearly 44 million people in Mexico without Internet access, The arrival of Starlink promises comprehensive coverage throughout the country.
Starlink has arrived in Mexico and is transforming the way we experience connectivity in Latin America. This innovative service not only brings the digital world closer to more people, but also connects us to the future.
