2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said in an interview with NBC News that as president, would deport the children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States.
“The family unit will be deported,” Ramaswamy said when asked by NBC News if the deportations would include children born in the United States, after a packed rally on Friday.
However, children born in the United States to undocumented immigrant parents are United States citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.
The Fourteenth Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to its jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States and of the State in which they reside.”
When asked again if these children would be deported along with their families, Ramaswamy doubled his bet. “That’s right,” he said.
Ramaswamy, like other conservatives, believes that the Fourteenth Amendment does not confer birthright citizenship.
But Ramaswamy’s hardline stance on immigration has not been enough to propel him ahead of other Republican contenders.
The tech entrepreneur has done well in Republican primary polls in recent months, but he is still far behind favorite Donald Trump. According to the RealClearPolitics polling average for the Republican Party nomination, Ramaswamy is averaging 6.6%.
