Your car may be selling your personal information

Julian Castillo

A thorough investigation by the mozilla foundation has shed light on a worrying practice in the automotive industry– The collection and sharing of vehicle owners’ personal information by manufacturers. In a study that covered 25 car brands, their privacy policies and how they manage user data were evaluated, and the results are alarming.

According to the research, an overwhelming 84% of car manufacturers implement the strategy of sharing drivers’ personal informationwhile a surprising 76% admitted to selling this data to third parties. This trend raises serious concerns about the privacy of users and their individual rights.

Most disturbing is the nature of the information collected, which ranges from music preferences to details about users’ sex lives.. This data is collected from various sources, including vehicle interaction, connected services, related mobile applications, and third-party data such as Sirius XM or Google Maps. This means that car manufacturers have the ability to access highly intimate information about vehicle owners, and they do so in alarming amounts.

Among the companies mentioned in the report are industry giants such as Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Kia and Tesla.. Unfortunately, Tesla ranked worst for privacywhich raises questions about how data is handled by one of the most innovative companies in the field of electric mobility.

The fact that these corporations have access to such sensitive personal information and share it with third parties, including service providers, data brokers and other companies, is deeply concerning. Also, the 56% of car brands said they could share information with the government or authorities in response to informal requests, casting doubt on the limits of privacy and data protection in the automotive industry.

It is important to note that We are only aware of these practices because of privacy laws that require the disclosure of this information.. So-called anonymized and aggregated data is also shared with vehicle data centers, raising additional concerns about the use of personal information for undisclosed business purposes.
