One of the most sensitive and recurring issues on the bilateral agenda between Mexico and the United States has been arms trafficking, a problem that has dramatically affected the Aztec nation, since around 80% of the arms sent illegally to that country come from the North American nation.
These weapons empower drug cartels and it was unheard of that the strategy against organized crime, pushed to a large extent by the US, did not contemplate addressing arms trafficking as a priority, but that changed with the Bicentennial Agreement , where the governments of presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Joe Biden agreed to push the issue as a priority, shortly before the Safe Communities Act was approved by the US Congress.
The Mexican government even filed a historic lawsuit against arms producers in a Massachusetts court, where it had a first defeat, but which sees new strength in the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Jesús, the leading journalist on immigration, politics and national affairs, spoke with Alejandro CelorioLegal Consultant to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico, who has led the legal effort of the López Obrador government.
In said interview, Celorio explains the importance of the judicial processes led by Mexico and their impact in the fight against arms trafficking.
Juanes, facing a difficult moment
Now we were taken by surprise by the most recent revelation of the famous Juaneswho through his social networks announced that he experienced a deep depression, and asked to make these problems visible, as well as to give priority to mental and emotional health.
It was through his Instagram account that the renowned Colombian singer-songwriter wrote a letter very long of almost three pages, in which he recounted how his process was and how he works daily to overcome that moment in his life.
This together with a black and white postcard where he is seen sitting pensively on the grass with his hair tied up wearing black.
“Feeling vulnerable makes me stronger. Being able to talk about my problems and my insecurities openly does not make me a coward or weak. On the contrary, it helps me heal from the soul and be more human. Many years have passed to be able to write these four lines” LETTER FROM JUANES
It was how this story began, which had not detailed as much as now. Well, let’s remember that a few years ago he had already revealed how he lived through this process, precisely so that more people were treated and felt accompanied and identified with the process.
“Everyone, absolutely everyone, carries a cross, personal grief, pain or frustration, regardless of our social class, religion or profession. In fact, professional success does not guarantee happiness, nor does money. Depression is a very common illness, more common than you might imagine. I personally have suffered from it for many years. I have had to deal with these genetic and chemical factors for a long time.”
JUAN’S LETTER
Juanes noted as part of his story, and later made one of the statements that most dismayed his fans, as he assures that he came to hate himself when he saw himself in the mirror.
“I got to such a point of exhaustion that I hated looking in the mirror, listening to my music, seeing myself in a publication, and, most painfully, not enjoying being on stage”
JUAN’S LETTER
In the same way, he recounted the work that it continues to cost him to fight this condition, since it is a constant in his life, and he even considers it part of his life, since he has not overcome it, according to what he recounted in this harsh writing.
“Today I can write these words after many years and much sadness, and I share my story with you. I managed to get ahead… I haven’t beaten depression, but I handle it much better. And I can say that I am happier and more successful than ever before in my life.”JUAN’S LETTER
Said letter that Juanes published on his Instagram already has more than seventy thousand ‘likes’, at the time of writing and publishing this note.
So far, she has received hundreds of messages of encouragement and congratulations for being brave. There is no doubt that the Colombian singer has embodied all his feelings in each of the words he wrote and this allows us to continue making mental health issues more openly visible.
