Nirvana's “In Utero” album turns 30

The album “In Utero”, the Nirvana’s third studio album turns 30which will feature 53 unpublished songs recorded in two live performances and will be released on October 27.

The songs come from the 1993 “Live At Los Angeles” concert and from the group’s last show in their hometown, “Live In Seattle”, recorded in 1994, according to reports. Nirvana on their official website.

The material was reconstructed from soundboard tapes by Jack Endino, who was the producer of the first album by the band led by Kurt Cobain, “Bleach” (1989). The project brings together a total of 72 songs, including live recordings from concerts in Rome, Springfield and New York.

In addition, it will include a remastered version of the original album made by Bob Weston, who worked as a sound engineer on the original takes of the album with Steve Albini.

“in utero”, with titles such as “Pennyroyal Tea” or “Heart-Shaped Box”, was released on September 21, 1993 and became the number 1 album on the Billboard 200 list -which ranks the two hundred best-selling albums of the week- , just like he had done with “Nevermind” in 1991.

The original album was characterized by having a rougher sound whose songs dealt with the personal problems of Cobainswho had been fighting addiction for years, as well as his recent paternity and the new fame that Nirvana had experienced.

this was the last album of the group after the tragic death of Cobain, who in 1994 was found dead in his Seattle home after shooting himself. The event marked the dissolution of the band also composed of Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.

The producer Jack Endinowho was behind the band’s debut album, Bleach (1989), is in charge of reconstructing the live tapes for the project that commemorates the album that in 1993 would become the unexpected farewell to the group made up of Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Kurt Cobain, who eight months later, at the age of 27, was found dead in his home from a shot to the head.

The original songs of “In Utero”as well as the bonus tracks and B-sides of the album, will be worked on at Chicago Mastering Services by Bob Weston, the only other engineer to be present in the studio during the recording sessions supervised by Steve Albini.

He anniversary release will be an 8 vinyl record pack which will contain not only the remastered version but also two discs with records from the tour, one with the concert in Los Angeles in December 1993 and another with the one in Seattle in January 1994, as well as an album with bonus tracks obtained in different presentations live and radio in Springfield, New York and Rome; with a total of 72 cuts, 53 of them never before published.

“In Utero”, was recorded in just over two weeks at Pachyderm studios.in Minnesota, became a great commercial and critical success, which highlighted the raw and unconventional sound of its songs and the lyrical composition of Cobain, who at that time was already suffering from a depressive condition and the abuse of substances like heroin.

The album was placed for a few weeks at the top of the US Billboard 200 ranking.with singles like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” topping the alternative music charts, and was certified five times Platinum, with 15 million copies sold worldwide.
