Joe Biden says he is disappointed by the absence of Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in India

US President Joe Biden expressed on Sunday (09.03.2023) his disappointment at the absence of the Chinese leader, Xi Jinpingat the G20 summit to be held this week in India.

Asked about Xi’s alleged failure to attend the New Delhi meeting on September 9-10, Biden told reporters: “I’m disappointed, but I’m going to go see him,” without elaborating.

Bilateral ties between the United States and China face a laundry list of problemsfrom trade disputes to the future of Taiwan, which the Asian giant considers its own territory to recover, including China’s expanding presence in the South China Sea.

The United States is trying to restore a more effective working relationship and has sent a number of top officials to China in recent months despite ongoing friction.

A senior European Union official said Thursday that Xi would not be at the G20 summit and would be represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang.

Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held unusual talks last month. face to face at the BRICS summit in South Africa, but tensions between the Asian giants remain high.

Relations between the world’s two most populous countries have been frozen since a Himalayan border clash that killed 20 Indian and at least four Chinese soldiers in 2020.
