Southern California Recovers From Storm Hilary Amid Earthquake Aftershocks

Southern California tries to recover from the devastation left behind by Tropical Storm Hilary amid aftershocks from the magnitude 5.1 quake that shook this Sunday afternoon in Ventura County.

at least some 17 aftershocks, with magnitudes between 2.0 and 3.9 degrees, have been recorded since the magnitude 5.1 quake struck, in full alert for the meteorological phenomenon.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake was recorded at 2:41 p.m., with its epicenter about 4.3 miles southeast of Ojai.a town in Ventura County, at a depth of approximately 9 miles.

In addition to Ventura County, the earthquake was felt in areas of Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

After the earthquake, there were at least 17 aftershocks.

The authorities no residents were reported injured as a result of the earthquake no material damage.

However, it was reported that at Thomas Aquinas College in the Santa Paula area of ​​Ventura County, cracks were found in the wallswhile some grilles, apparently for air ducts, fell to the floor.

Also some picture frames were broken, while a bell fell off its rail in the bell toweralthough school officials classified the impacts as minor and that they will keep the building closed until a more detailed review is made.

Emergency services were on alert before the arrival of storm Hilary in southern Californiawith forecasts of heavy rains that could cause flash floods, landslides and downed trees.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said there were no reports of injuries or property damage from the quake.but were related to the effects of Storm Hilary.

Crowley mentioned that the reports mentioned downed power lines, two debris flows in Sherman Oaks and a large tree collapse in Westwood.

The LAFD chief said that tenants of an apartment building in Koreatown reported some damage to the buildingin particular the partial collapse of the roof, although it was not confirmed that it occurred due to the earthquake.

The USGS asked residents who felt the quakes to share their experience on the agency’s website.

Some specialists mentioned that The earthquake could have been preceded by a series of small-magnitude tremors that have been recorded since Saturday morning.

They considered that the aftershocks could still continue, with a 5% probability that some exceed the magnitude of 5.1 registered by the earthquake at 2:41 pm on Sunday.
