The Australian Football League (AFL) is investigating cases of “illegal” and “without consent” distribution ofand images with sexual content of dozens of players and former players, many of which are presumed to be false, on the internet and social networks.
The “private and personal” nude photos appeared in a huge Google archive with sub-folders of the players and were disseminated “by one or more anonymous persons,” according to an AFL statement issued late Wednesday.
The popular Australian rules football league -which is a team sport more similar to rugby than football, but with different rules and an oval playing field- He stressed that “many of the images have not yet been verified.”
“The AFL has no information as to why personal images have been illegally disseminated. and without consent or what is the reason for doing so,” the statement said.
The AFL also reported that it was aware of the distribution of this material with sexual content. at the beginning of the week following the complaints from the clubs and assured that he is investigating the case.
He also reported the leaks to the Police and the Electronic Security Commission, which monitors activity on the internet and social networks, although for the moment the authorities have not opened an investigation because none of the affected individuals have filed complaints.
The chief executive of the AFL Players Association, Paul Marsh, told Australian public broadcaster ABC on Thursday that he is concerned about the “enormous invasion of privacy” of these players and former players.
“I don’t know how, if the players have been hacked or if the players have shared images with trusted people that they have somehow ended up in this situation,” Marsh said, calling the sharing of the images “a heinous and disgusting act and a likely unlawful violation of privacy.”
