The joy of a vacation on the Red Sea in Egypt turned into the worst tragedy for a traveling family, after A 23-year-old man was fatally attacked by a tiger shark.

The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment said that the man died after being attacked by the huge shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities have closed a 46-mile stretch of coastline and announced that it will remain off limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had captured the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian consulate in Hurghada confirmed that the man was a Russian citizen, but did not give his name.

Meanwhile, a video supposedly of the attack circulates on social networks, where a man is seen writhing in the water before being attacked by a shark that circles around him, before being dragged down, however, the authorities did not have confirmed the authenticity.

Shark attacks are rare in the coastal regions of the Red Sea. However, in 2022 there were two attacks in Hurghada in a matter of days that killed an Austrian and a Romanian tourist.

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, are some of the country’s most famous destinations and are popular with European tourists. Divers are drawn to the steep drop-offs offshore coral reefs, which offer rich and colorful marine life.
