A West Virginia state trooper was shot dead in the middle of a shootout registered Mingo County last Friday.
Authorities reported that a 29-year-old man was arrested for the incident.
Police responded Friday to a reported shooting near Matewan. When they arrived at the scene, they found a man identified as Timothy Kennedy, who began shooting at the officers.
In the middle of the shooting one of the officers was fatally shot.
“I am absolutely heartbroken tonight to report that West Virginia State Police Sergeant Cory Maynard was fatally injured in an incident this afternoon near Matewan,” West Virginia Governor Jim Justice said.
“The brave men and women of law enforcement, and all the first responders who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, are an inspiration to all of us,” Justice added in a statement.
The governor’s office has ordered that all U.S. and West Virginia flags fly at half-staff to honor the next soldier to start immediately.
The search for Kennedy delayed graduation ceremonies at Mingo Central High School and emergency workers urged area residents to stay home while police searched for the suspect.
Justice said multiple law enforcement agencies joined a widespread search in the Beech Creek area to search for the suspect prior to his arrest.
During this weekend, One person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting recorded early Sunday during a memorial service for a man who was killed in a car accident several years ago in Chicago.
Deputy Chief Adnardo Gutierrez of the Chicago Police Department noted that a large group of people had gathered around 1:00 a.m. to commemorate four years since a man’s fatal accident when there was an altercation and shots rang out.
Seven people were injured and one of them, A 25-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a hospital.Gutierrez said.
