Your phone's biometric recognition system might not be as secure as you think

Julian Castillo

Two recent cybersecurity studies have revealed a troubling finding: biometric security systems on iOS and Android devices they might not be as safe as thought. These systems, which include fingerprint recognition and facial recognition, have been widely praised as advanced security measures. However, the findings of these studies suggest that they may be vulnerable to attack.

One of the studies examined various devices from well-known brands, such as Samsung, Motorola, Apple and Nokia, and found that even with these biometric security measures in place, the devices were still compromised. This raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of biometric security systems in general.

“We found insufficient protection of fingerprint data in the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) of fingerprint sensors,” reads one of the studies.

As for fingerprint recognition, the study revealed that the devices were not as foolproof as previously believed.. It was found that in some cases, attackers could forge fingerprints and fool the security system. This could allow them to access the devices and the personal information stored on them.

Facial recognition also showed serious vulnerabilities. These findings are alarming, as biometric security systems have been touted as a more secure way to protect user data and privacy.. However, these studies show that there are still weaknesses in these systems, which raises questions about their effectiveness and the need to find more robust solutions.

Among the devices where this flaw was detected are the Honor 70, Motorola Razr 2022, Motorola Moto E13, Motorola H13, Motorola Moto G23, Nokia G60 5G, Nokia X30 5G, Oppo A57, Oppo A57s, Samsung Galaxy A23 5G and M53 5G and vivo Y76 5G.

It is important to note that mobile device manufacturers and operating system developers are constantly working to improve biometric security and address these vulnerabilities. However, until stronger solutions are implemented, users should be aware of the potential risks and consider taking additional security measures, such as using strong passwords and two-factor authentication, to protect their devices and personal data. .
