The designer Tommy Hilfiger celebrates his 72 years: how the “American style” triumphed

In short, one of the brands that can reflect the so-called “American style” is Tommy Hilfigerand it is that since its foundation in 1985, this brand has marked the fashion, culture and entertainment of the United States.

Tommy Hilfiger, who was born in Elmira, New York, he had his first contact with fashion in 1969when together with two friends they opened a store called “People’s Place”.

This store mainly sold flared jeans, rock n’ roll posters, and music records. Over time the brand became famous and other stores opened, but in 1979 “People’s Place” went bankrupt.

But this did not stop the young designer, that seven years later he created his homonymous branda, which he himself describes as “Preppy cool”.

His first designs were based on the classic university style, such as polo shirts and dress pants.

Hilfiger earned a reputation as a hard-working young designer and He was considered for jobs at Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein. However, what he really wanted was his own label.

In 1984, Indian businessman Mohan Murjani allowed Hilfiger to design the label under his own name, sealing the deal.

In the early 1990s, the hip-hop world embraced oversized versions of Hilfiger clothing, and the brand assiduously courted rap stars and celebrities.

In 2000, Hilfiger separated from his wife after a 20-year marriagewith whom he had four children, his professional fortunes also collapsed.

His clothing fell out of favor with the hip-hop crowd, and sales plummeted by as much as 75 percent. Worse than bad sales the Tommy Hilfiger brand was no longer in fashion.

Hilfiger married his second wife, Dee Ocleppo, in December 2008, and the couple welcomed their son Sebastian in August 2009.

Today the empire of Tommy Hilfiger is still standing and relevant in the fashion industrythanks to its image renewal and collaborations with personalities such as actress Zendaya, supermodel Gigi Hadid, and racing driver Lewis Hamilton, a combination that gave the brand good publicity.
