The meteorological records that Cyclone Freddy broke on its path of destruction in the Indian Ocean

A historic cyclone that has hit the African continent hard.

Malawi, Madagascar and Mozambique are recovering from the effects of the cyclone Freddyconsidered one of the storms longest-lived ever recorded in the southern hemisphere and, perhaps, throughout the world.

More than 400 people have died and thousands of homes have been destroyed.

Southeast Africa is often hit by cyclones and tropical storms from the Indian Ocean, but Freddy has been different for several reasons.

How long has it lasted?

Freddy has finally been declared a “dead” storm by the French weather service. The storm was named by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology on February 4 and came to an end on March 14.

It was strong enough to be officially classified as a tropical system for about 36 days.

However, we must wait for confirmation from the World Meteorological Organization before we can say if it is officially longest lasting storm never recorded.

What’s interesting about Freddy is how far he’s traveled. He began his journey off the northwestern coast of Australia, crossing the South Indian Ocean from east to west.

It is one of only four storms in history to have done such a thing.

How powerful was it?

The classic way to measure the strength of a storm is by wind speed. At his strongest, Freddy was the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane with winds in excess of 260 km/h.

Fortunately, its point of greatest intensity occurred in open water.

Freddy broke the record for elderly accumulated cyclonic energy (ACE) all-time record in the southern hemisphere, a measure of storm strength over time, surpassing the previous record, set by Cyclone Fantala in 2016.

That energy was higher than all that is produced during an Atlantic hurricane season.

It was also the first storm in the southern hemisphere to experience four separate rounds of rapid escalationwhich means an increase in maximum sustained winds of at least 30 knots in just 24 hours.

Since landfall the amount of rainfall has exceeded 600mm in some areas with torrential rains triggering landslides in vulnerable areas.

Packing gale force winds, the storm also brought large storm surges as it reactivated over the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel.

What is the difference between a cyclone and a tropical storm?

A tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean is stronger than a tropical storm.

Freddy first struck Mozambique as a moderate tropical storm.

Its second landfall in Mozambique was as a tropical cyclone and by the time it reached Malawi, it had weakened to a tropical storm, although it was there that it caused the most destruction.

Freddy has now disintegrated, but its remnants are still bringing rain to parts of Mozambique and Malawi, which could worsen the flooding situation.

What does climate change have to do with it?

This is a difficult question to answer since Freddy is certainly unusual.

We have seen these types of storms before when there is a strong or persistent weather pattern of The girl in the Indian Ocean.

The Bureau of Meteorology has just declared the end of a series of back-to-back La Niña events that began in September 2020.

In terms of climate change, it’s a well-known fact that warmer air can hold more water, so it’s likely that the amount of rain that fell with Freddy, especially during his time on earth, was increased by change. climate.

Likewise, warmer ocean waters contain more energy, so these storms can become more powerful over time and be able to unleash even more precipitation.

Similarly, rapid intensification is more likely with higher sea temperatures.

The storm’s slow movement, especially just before its second landfall in Mozambique, could also be related to climate change.
