Mexico took another step in the hierarchy in mixed martial arts after one of its representatives, Alexa Grasso, will be proclaimed champion of the female flyweight of the UFC on Saturday in Las Vegas after defeating Valentina Shevchenko. In the stands, a fan of the Aztecs as he is Conor McGregor, celebrated the victory effusively.
The wrestler was also present at the T-Mobile Arena in Nevada and when the victory of Alexa Grasso, 29 years old and a native of Guadalajara, was confirmed over the venue’s public address system, McGregor’s reaction was a shout of celebration: he shouted “Viva México”.
Together with the Irish McGregor was the award-winning actor Jake Gyllenhaalworking as an observer of the fight and recording his next film, in which he plays an MMA gladiator.
Conor McGregor’s justified reaction: Alexa Grasso made history for Mexico
It is not for less, since Alexa Grasso became the first female champion of Mexico in the UFC after the evening of March 4 and after a fight intelligently worked to take away the undefeated from the already former champion Valentina Shevchenko, from Kyrgyzstan.
The fight on the fence began evenly, with Shevchenko working on the counterattack and Grasso looking for weaknesses in his opponent, with an orderly and solid style. The first round the Mexican achieved a good takedown, seeking to please the judges.
However, it was not necessary for the fight to end to know the decision of the judges. In the fourth round, the Kyrgyz made a mistake launching a spinning kick and the Mexican took the opportunity to jump on her back and sink a ‘mataleón’ through her neck.
Alexa Grasso got the submission, the third fight she has won this way and now he goes to Jalisco with the UFC crown, to celebrate it in style.
