As part of the lawsuit against Genaro Garcia Luna which takes place in the Eastern District Court of New York, it was the turn of another powerful drug trafficker to take the stand to give his testimony.

It’s about the Colombian Harold Mauricio Poveda Ortega, aka “El Conejo”who came to be considered by international anti-narcotics authorities as one of the largest suppliers of cocaine.

Linked to the organization of Diego Leon Montoya, aka “Don Diego”Poveda Ortega’s criminal career rose to the fore when he became the link between the Norte del Valle Cartel and the Sinaloa cartelthen led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Part of his job was to make sure drug shipments reached Mexico safely. This is how, little by little, “El Conejo” gained the trust of the Mexican drug lords, including the Beltrán Leyva brothers, with whom he worked later.

One of the first times that his name resounded in the media occurred in 2008, when he managed to escape from the authorities after an operation in a narco-mansion in Mexico City where a party was taking place.

In said property, the Federal Police arrested 15 criminals and several women who were entertaining the event. Likewise, various exotic animals such as African lions, Siberian tigers and panthers that were part of a private zoo of the drug trafficker were seized.

Two years later, in 2010 and thanks to the exchange of information with US authorities, Poveda finally fell in Mexico and his extradition took place in 2012.
