Eating large amounts of highly processed foods can have several negative effects on people’s health.because in addition to being a cause of obesity, it also causes heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

However, this goes unnoticed by a sector of American society or at least this is reflected in data collected by the University of Michigan through the so-called National Survey on Healthy Aging.

From the survey it was determined that one in eight Americans between the ages of 50 and 80 is addicted to ultra-processed food, also known as “junk”.

In addition, this group presents physical withdrawal, eats more than planned and is unable to reduce their high volume intake.

Of the adults surveyed, it was determined that women are more likely to be addicted to ultra-processed foods, such as sweets, salty snacks, sugary drinks, and fast food.

Also, it was found that addiction to “junk” products is present in 17% of adults between 50 and 64 years of age, as well as in 8% of people between 65 and 80 years of age.

Another noteworthy fact is that men and women who considered themselves to be in poor physical shape are twice as likely to become addicted to ultra-processed food, 32% and 14%, respectively.

Junk food addiction was also detected in 45% of women whose mental health is fair or poor, and in 23% of men with the same profile.

A key factor related to the weakness for ultra-processed foods is hidden behind those who choose to live somewhat isolated, since more than half of the women who choose this lifestyle tend to consume a greater amount of junk food; while that happens only to 26% of men who live apart from others.

One in four people with a junk food addiction acknowledged that at least once a week they faced the urge to eat a piece of some ultra-processed food. And I couldn’t stop thinking about something else.
