Mercedes-Benz: why the brand is called that

Ronald Ortega

Mercedes-Benz is a luxury car brand of German origin. The brand name has an interesting story behind it.

The brand was founded in 1926, after two German automobile companies, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie., merged. DMG had been founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1890, while Benz & Cie. It had been founded by Carl Benz in 1883.

Daimler and Benz had worked on developing internal combustion engines independently of each other, and both had made significant advances in the field. However, the two companies had been experiencing financial difficulties and had decided to pool their resources and efforts to create a stronger and more competitive company.

The name “Mercedes-Benz” is derived from the daughter of motorist and DMG dealer Emil Jellinek, Mercedes Jellinek. Jellinek had been a big supporter of Daimler engines and had been one of the company’s early customers. As a thank you from her, Daimler decided to name one of her newer models her “Mercedes” after her.

Benz & Cie. He had also had a very successful car model on the market, the 1886 “Benz Patent-Motorwagen”, considered the first car in history.

The combination of the names of both companies, Mercedes and Benz, was considered an appropriate way to represent the fusion of the two names and the history and legacy of both brands.

Since then, Mercedes-Benz has been recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury automobile brands and has been responsible for the production of some of the most iconic and technologically advanced automobiles in history. The Mercedes-Benz brand is one of the most recognized in the world and is synonymous with luxury, style and cutting-edge technology.
