The brand was founded in 1926, after two German automobile companies, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie., merged. DMG had been founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1890, while Benz & Cie. It had been founded by Carl Benz in 1883.
Daimler and Benz had worked on developing internal combustion engines independently of each other, and both had made significant advances in the field. The name “Mercedes-Benz” is derived from the daughter of motorist and DMG dealer Emil Jellinek, Mercedes Jellinek.
