The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (3), who has rediscovered his best version after a season full of doubts, will try to stop the colossus Novak Djokovic (4)in a final of the Australian Open that will determine the new world number one.
Djokovic will have between his eyebrows the 22 greats of Spanish Rafael Nadal (1), who could equalize in the case of being proclaimed champion against a Tsitsipas who will seek his first slam conquest.
“I am playing great tennis, enjoying myself. I don’t see as many slumps or negativity, even if things don’t work out. I am very optimisticthat is something that was missing in my game”, Tsitsipas explained after his four-set victory against the Russian Karen Khachanov (18).
The only great result of the Greek was the defense of the title in Monte Carlo, a crown that he has lifted twice and which, together with the 2019 ATP Finals, make up his great achievements of a list of winners that could include a Grand Slam this Sunday.
It will be the second time that the 24-year-old has played a slam final, after he fell one step away from the title against the same opponent, in Paris in the 2021 edition.
On that occasion, the Balkan, who did not remember or did not want to remember that game in one of his last press conferences, fHe was able to come back from two sets down for the first time in a major final.
Djokovic could also exceed 92 titles on the professional circuit that the man from Manacor has and is fourth on a list led by the American Jimmy Connors with 109.
To all these incentives we must add the fact that Melbourne Park will be attended by thousands of Greek and Serbian fans as a consequence of both countries having vast communities in the capital of the Australian state of Victoria.
The Balkan, who overcame his problems in his left thigh, won all nine finals played at Rod Laver Arena and has a positive record of 22-11 in Grand Slam finals.
The Balkan has a forceful face to face (10-2) against his next rival, after winning the last nine times.
Tsitsipas reached the final after beating Frenchman Quentin Halys, local Rinky Hijikata, Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, Italian Jannik Sinner (15), Czech Jiri Lehecka and Russian Karen Khachanov (18) in previous rounds.
