Michigan officers shot and killed a man who pointed a laser and fired a rifle at their police helicopter on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. as the helicopter circled north of Detroit, according to the police.
The 33-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was in an abandoned house at the time of the shooting.
Two state troopers shot and killed the suspectwho recently moved into the house, according to a neighbor via Fox 2 Detroit.
In the video, the man climbed out of the second-story window and pointed a green laser at the plane.
“Someone pointed a green laser at us from the back of the house, in the upper window,” the helicopter pilot said the moment he noticed the laser shining into the cockpit.
Moments later, the man emerged from the house and pointed a “long gun” at the helicopter hovering overhead before opening fire.
“Now there is someone standing at the back door. Right now, they’re in the backyard,” the pilot said. “Actually he could, he could be armed. It almost looks like he’s holding a long gun pointed at us right now. Yeah, he’s shooting at us right now. He is shooting rounds. He has a long gun, an extended magazine.”
Police recovered five firearms from the abandoned house, including the one the suspect had used to fire on the plane.
“They found multiple caches of weapons and ammunition throughout the house as if it was set up for some type of ambush or for security purposes or whatever,” Lt. Mike Shaw said according to Fox 2 Detroit.
The helicopter suffered no damage from the gunfire.
The two state troopers who killed the shooter are only being identified as a two-year veteran and a nine-year veteran of the Michigan State Police.
Both are on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
